Margate began as South Atlantic City in 1885 and took its current name in 1909. Lucy the Elephant, the 65 foot wood and tin landmark built in 1881 to sell lots, still stands on Atlantic Avenue. On the Ventnor line, Marven Gardens is a 1920s and 1930s neighborhood of Tudor Revival, Spanish Revival and Dutch Colonial homes on Circle, East and West drives, now a National Register district. Elsewhere, older beach cottages sit beside large new houses, and about one in five homes in town was built since 2000. Most homes are second homes. More than 60% of housing units sat empty at the 2020 census, so many exteriors face the salt air all winter with no one home to see the damage start.

Margate homes get both kinds of work from us, inside and out. Inside, we paint living spaces, stairwells, trim and cabinets, and repair drywall before the season. Outside, we paint siding, trim, porches, doors and garage doors, and we stain decks that take sun and salt from May through September.

Painting Needs in Margate

Period details in Marven Gardens

Tudor, Spanish and Dutch Colonial homes each have their own look. Half-timbering, stucco, arched openings and gambrel roofs all need the right prep and the right colors. We clean and patch carefully, use paint suited to each surface, and keep the period look intact. Ask us about color schemes that fit the style of your home.

Salt air on homes left empty

When a house sits empty for months, small problems grow. Salt dulls paint, caulk cracks and bare wood soaks up water. We repair and repaint before the damage spreads. A fall or spring check of trim, doors and railings can catch trouble early and keep a bigger repaint further off.

Bay side moisture

Low streets, like the stretch of Amherst Avenue that flooded during Hurricane Erin, take on water during big storms and high tides. Garage doors, lower trim and steps take the worst of it. We seal those areas well, prime any bare wood, and use mildew resistant finishes. For homes on the water, deck staining helps keep boards from cracking.

Ready for the season

Owners want the house fresh when family and guests arrive. We schedule interior work in the off season so walls, ceilings, trim and cabinets are done well before Memorial Day. Drywall dings and scuffs from last summer get repaired first, so the new paint looks clean. If the house is a rental, we work around your booking calendar.

Margate Painting Questions

Do you paint homes in Marven Gardens?

Yes. We enjoy working on the 1920s and 1930s homes in Marven Gardens. Stucco, half-timber trim and older wood need careful prep and the right products. We can also help you pick colors that suit the original style of the house.

When is the best time to paint a Margate shore house?

Spring and fall are usually best. The weather is mild, which helps paint cure, and the work is done before or after the summer rush. Interior work can be done in the colder months, so the house is ready when the season begins.

Can you paint my garage door and front door too?

Yes. Garage door painting and front door painting are quick ways to freshen a home's curb appeal. On the bay side, garage doors also take more water, so we clean, prime any bare spots, and use a durable exterior finish.

We are only in Margate on summer weekends. Can you paint while we are away?

Yes. With more than half of the homes in town sitting empty for much of the year, we are used to working with owners who are not there. You give us a key or a lockbox code, we send photos as the work moves along, and we lock up each night. Interior jobs fit well in the off season, so the house is fresh when you come back for Memorial Day.

Does the salt air shorten the life of exterior paint on a Margate house?

It does, especially on a house nobody checks all winter. Salt dulls the finish, dries out caulk and opens up bare wood that soaks in rain. The sunny, windward side goes first. Good prep and a coastal-grade paint push the next repaint years further out, and a quick walk around the house each spring and fall catches peeling trim or rails before it spreads.

The house smells musty after being closed up. Will paint cover that?

Paint alone will not fix it, but we can deal with the cause as part of the job. A shore house shut tight for months traps humidity, and mildew shows up on bathroom ceilings, closets and the north side walls. We wash those spots down, let them dry, and prime with a stain and odor blocking primer. Then we paint with a mildew resistant finish so it stays clean through next winter.
