Washington Township stayed mostly farmland well into the 1900s. Then the suburbs arrived in pockets. In the 1960s the township was a handful of separate housing areas: Wedgwood, Whitman Square, the Birches, Birches West and Hurffville. The Birches, reached from Fries Mill Road and Ganttown Road, went up mostly in the 1960s with full basements and one-car attached garages on lots a little over a quarter acre. Over the next decades the township filled in around Egg Harbor Road, Ganttown Road and Hurffville-Crosskeys Road, which frame its town center. Grenloch Terrace, once the Lenape village of Tetamekon, is its oldest settlement. That spread gives the township homes from almost every decade since.

We handle interior painting, wallpaper removal and drywall repair, along with exterior painting of siding, trim, shutters and gutters. Whether your street is in the Birches, near Washington Lake Park or close to Grenloch Lake, we will set up a free estimate that fits your schedule.

Painting Needs in Washington Township

1960s homes in the first neighborhoods

The Birches and Wedgwood were among the township's earliest subdivisions. Homes there are now about 60 years old. Many still have original wood trim. If your house has old wallpaper or paneling, we strip the paper, repair drywall and plaster patches, and prime properly so the new paint lays flat and lasts for years.

Gutters, fascia and shutters

On older colonials and split-levels, the trim package is what ages the house. Faded shutters, chalky gutters and peeling fascia make even a clean house look tired. We clean and prime aluminum gutters, scrape and paint fascia, and refinish shutters. Coordinating these with a fresh front door color is a fast way to update the look from the street.

Humid summers and shaded lots

Many of the older streets here have large trees, and summers in Gloucester County are humid. Shaded siding dries slowly, and that is where peeling and mildew start. We clean and treat affected areas, use paint suited to damp conditions, and schedule exterior work for dry stretches so coats cure the way they should.

Washington Township Painting Questions

Can you remove wallpaper in an older Washington Township home?

Many 1960s and 1970s homes have wallpaper, sometimes several layers deep. We score and soak the paper, scrape it off, then wash away the leftover glue. After that we repair any damage to the wall and prime it before painting. Paste left behind is what usually causes new paint to crack.

Do you paint aluminum gutters?

Aluminum gutters lose their color over time and start to look chalky. We clean them, use a primer that bonds to metal, and finish with exterior paint to match your trim. Painting gutters along with the fascia and shutters gives the whole roofline a clean, finished look.

What areas of Washington Township do you serve?

We cover the whole township, including the Birches, Wedgwood, Hurffville, Grenloch and the neighborhoods around the town center on Egg Harbor Road. We also work in Turnersville and the Washington Township side of Sewell. Reach out and we will schedule a free estimate at your home.

How do you handle mildew on shaded siding?

Tree-lined streets in the older neighborhoods keep siding damp, and mildew shows up as dark spots on the shady side. Painting over it does not work, since it grows right back through the new coat. We clean and treat the affected areas first, let the siding dry, and then paint with a product made to resist mildew. Keeping shrubs trimmed off the house helps too.

Can you paint over the wood paneling in my Birches home?

Yes. Paneling from the 1960s and 1970s takes paint well with the right prep. We clean it, sand the glossy finish, fill the grooves if you want a flat wall, and prime with a bonding primer so the paint sticks. Two finish coats later, a dark den looks bright and current. It is far less work than tearing the paneling out.

What should I have ready before you come out for an estimate?

A short list of the rooms or surfaces you want painted is all we need. If you have color ideas, pictures help. For exterior work, let us know about any peeling, old wallpaper inside, or gutters and shutters you want included. We measure, inspect the surfaces, and leave you a written scope. We come to you, so there is no need to clear your day.
