Haddon Heights began as a railroad suburb. In 1890 Benjamin Lippincott built a passenger station on his land for the Atlantic City Railroad, and he and Charles Hillman planned a town for middle-class families leaving Philadelphia. The borough incorporated in 1904. Its streets still show Queen Anne houses with wraparound porches, American Foursquares, Colonial Revival homes and Craftsman bungalows. Fairfield Estates joined in 1926 and filled in through the 1950s. These houses carry a lot of wood: porch posts, eaves, window trim and siding. Inside, many still have plaster walls. Good prep matters more here than any fancy paint.
We provide interior painting for living rooms, stairways and bedrooms with plaster walls and wide trim. Our exterior painting covers wood siding, porch rails, columns and deep eaves. From the blocks near Station Avenue and the White Horse Pike to the older homes along Sycamore Street, we arrive on time and clean up at the end of each day.
Painting Needs in Haddon Heights
Wraparound porches and Foursquare eaves
Queen Anne porches wrap around two sides of the house, and Foursquares have wide, deep eaves. Both hide a lot of surface that is awkward to reach. We use proper ladders and planks to get under the overhangs, scrape every loose edge and prime bare wood. Porch ceilings, rails and spindles get brushed by hand so no corner is skipped.
Plaster, lath and old wallpaper
The local historical society has marked 217 Centennial Homes in the borough. In houses that old, walls are usually plaster over wood lath, and some rooms still hide wallpaper under paint. We remove old paper first, wash off the paste and seal the surface. Then we patch cracks and soft spots so the new finish lays down smooth.
Craftsman bungalow details
Bungalows have exposed rafter tails, tapered porch columns and wide window casings. Those details look best when the body, trim and accent colors are planned together. We talk through a scheme with you, then give each part the right sheen: flat or satin on siding, semi-gloss on trim, and a tough enamel on doors and railings that get handled every day.

Haddon Heights Painting Questions
Can you remove old wallpaper from plaster walls?
It can be done, but plaster under old paper can be soft, so we go slowly. We score and soak the paper, scrape it off gently, then wash away the leftover paste. Paste left behind makes new paint crack and peel. After it dries we seal the wall with a primer made for this job, patch any damage, and paint.
When is the best time to paint the outside of an older Haddon Heights house?
Late spring through early fall usually works best. Paint needs dry wood, mild temperatures and time to cure before the evening dew. Old wood siding holds moisture after a rain, so we wait for it to dry out before priming. We watch the forecast closely and plan the sunny sides of the house for cooler parts of the day.
Do you paint porch floors and steps?
Yes, and they matter. Porch floors take more wear than any other painted surface on the house. We clean and scrape, sand smooth any raised grain, prime bare boards, and use a coating made for porch and floor use. If you want better grip on the steps, we can add a texture to the final coat.
How long should a repaint last on the wood siding of a Haddon Heights home?
Longer on the shaded sides, shorter where the afternoon sun hits. Old wood siding has been painted many times, so how well the old layers hold decides a lot. When we scrape to sound paint, prime bare spots and use a quality acrylic, the body of the house usually stays in good shape for years, while south facing trim and porch rails need touch-ups sooner.
How many colors does a Craftsman bungalow usually need?
Three is the common answer: a body color, a trim color and an accent for the door and maybe the sash. Rafter tails and tapered columns look best in the trim color so the shape reads from the street. We put sample patches on a sunny wall and a shaded wall, since colors shift under the porch roof. Then we match the sheen to each part.
Can you paint the wide wood trim inside my Foursquare without losing the detail?
We can, though wide baseboards, door casings and stair parts in these houses usually have several old coats, and some drips and brush marks with them. We sand the surfaces smooth, fill chips, and spot prime. Then we brush on an enamel that levels out and dries hard. Plaster walls behind the trim get patched and primed at the same time.
