From about 1830 to 1880, Northfield was a working seaport. Shipyards near Shore Road built two-masted schooners, and sea captains put watch towers on their roofs to spot ships coming in. Their homes faced Shore Road. Later, the Somers brick company dug clay here by hand, and after it closed in the Depression the pits filled with rain and became the 21 ponds of Birch Grove Park. Most of the city came after World War II. Nearly half of Northfield's homes were built from the 1940s through the 1960s, almost all of them single-family houses on quiet blocks off Tilton Road and Shore Road. Those homes have now been through many rounds of paint.

We handle interior and exterior painting across Northfield. That includes walls, ceilings and trim inside, cabinet painting in original midcentury kitchens, and drywall repair where plaster or old board has cracked. Outside, we paint siding, trim, doors, gutters and garage doors.

Painting Needs in Northfield

Postwar homes on their next cycle

Homes from the 1950s and 1960s make up much of Northfield. They are solid houses, but trim, soffits and doors have been painted many times. Built-up layers crack and lift. We scrape and sand down to a sound surface, prime bare wood, and caulk joints so the new paint does not fail along the old seams.

Captains' homes on Shore Road

The older houses along Shore Road need a gentler hand. Original wood siding, detailed trim and porches deserve careful prep instead of fast work. Older layers may contain lead, so we keep dust down and clean up well. We choose paint colors that suit the age of the home if you want help picking.

Trees, shade and gutters

Many blocks have mature trees, which means shade, damp siding and full gutters. Mildew can grow on north walls and under eaves. We treat mildew before painting, and we can paint gutters and downspouts to match the trim so the whole house looks clean and finished. Clearing and painting gutters also keeps water from staining the trim below.

Northfield Painting Questions

How often should a Northfield home be repainted outside?

It depends on the surface, the sun and how well the last job was prepped. Trim and doors on the sunny side wear faster than shaded siding. Look for chalking, cracking or peeling. If you see those, call us and we will come look and give you a free estimate.

Can you paint my original 1960s kitchen cabinets?

Yes. Cabinet painting is a great fit for solid older cabinets. We clean and degrease them, sand, prime with a bonding primer, and finish with a durable cabinet paint. Doors and drawer fronts get careful attention so the finish is smooth and even.

Do you paint older homes along Shore Road?

Yes. Older homes are a big part of what we do. We take extra care with prep on old wood, repair small problem spots, and use primers made for aged surfaces. We also work clean, because older homes often have old layers of paint under the surface.

Why does the north side of my Northfield house keep growing mildew?

Shade. Mature trees on many Northfield blocks keep the north wall and the area under the eaves damp long after a rain, and mildew loves that. Painting over it does not work, because it grows back through the new coat. We kill the mildew first, rinse, and let the siding dry. Then we prime and use a finish with mildew resistance built in. Trimming branches back from the house helps too.

Can you repaint the garage door on a 1950s Northfield house?

Sure. Garage doors from that era are usually wood or steel, and both take paint well once the old finish is sanded and any rust or bare wood is primed. We paint the door to match the trim or give it a darker color that makes the front of the house pop. Because the door moves, we use a flexible exterior paint that will not crack at the panel joints.

My midcentury home has cracks in the plaster walls. Do you fix those before painting?

Yes, and we always do it first. Homes from the 1950s and 1960s often have plaster or old wallboard that has settled and cracked at corners, above doors and along ceiling seams. We open up the cracks, tape and fill them, sand smooth, and spot prime. Nail pops and dents get the same care. Once the walls are sound, two coats of paint hide the repairs completely.
