Linwood was called Leedsville until 1880, and its oldest homes sit in the Linwood Historic District along Shore Road and short stretches of Poplar and Maple avenues. The district covers 1820 to 1935, so you will see simple Federal-style houses, Gothic Revival homes with steep roofs and fancy trim, Queen Annes, foursquares and bungalows. Many were built by sea captains and customs collectors. Most of the city is newer. About four in ten Linwood homes went up from the 1940s through the 1960s, and nearly nine in ten are single-family houses. On the east side, the city runs out to the bay marsh, and homes near Linwood Country Club look across it.
We do interior and exterior painting all over Linwood. Inside, we paint walls, ceilings and trim, update kitchens with cabinet painting, and fix drywall before the color goes on. Outside, we take on detailed Victorian trim, siding, porches, doors and garage doors, plus deck staining on homes that face the water.
Painting Needs in Linwood
Victorian trim in the historic district
Gothic Revival and Queen Anne homes on Shore Road have steep gables, brackets, spindles and lots of trim. Every piece has edges where paint fails first. We hand scrape and sand the details, prime bare wood, and brush the trim so paint gets into every corner. Picking two or three trim colors can bring that detail back to life.
Postwar homes with lots of years on them
Much of Linwood was built after World War II. Those homes have seen decades of paint on fascia, soffits, window trim and doors. We look for rot and loose caulk, fix small problems, and apply quality exterior paint. On many homes, gutter painting and a new front door color finish the job nicely.
Marsh views and moist air
Homes on the east side, out toward the bay, get wind and moisture off the marsh. Decks and railings there gray out quickly. We clean and stain decks, paint railings with finishes that handle damp air, and keep a close eye on any wood that sits close to the ground.

Linwood Painting Questions
Can you paint a Victorian home in the Linwood Historic District?
Yes. Detailed older homes are some of the most rewarding work we do. We take our time on prep, hand brush the trim, and use primers made for aged wood. If you want help choosing a historic color scheme, we are happy to make suggestions.
Do you stain decks in Linwood?
Yes. Deck staining is a common request, especially on homes with views of the bay and marsh. We clean the wood, let it dry, and apply a stain that protects against sun and moisture. A fresh coat keeps the wood from graying and cracking.
What does an interior paint job include?
We move and cover furniture, protect floors, fill nail holes, repair drywall dings, and sand rough spots. Then we prime where needed and apply two coats on walls and trim. We clean up each day and do a final walkthrough with you.
What do you look for when you quote a Shore Road Victorian?
Trim, first. Gothic Revival and Queen Anne homes have brackets, spindles and gable details where paint fails before anywhere else, so we check each one for bare wood and rot. Then we look at the siding, porch floors, window sashes and any spots where old layers are lifting. The quote spells out how much hand scraping and priming the house needs, so there are no surprises later.
Is it worth painting the gutters on my 1950s Linwood home?
Often it is. Faded or streaked gutters stand out on a postwar house, even when the siding looks fine. Gutter painting lets us match them to the trim or the fascia, and a fresh front door color at the same time makes a big difference from the street. We clean the metal, prime any rust or bare spots, and use a paint made to flex with the gutter in heat and cold.
The walls in my older Linwood house have wallpaper over plaster. What can you do?
That is common in homes from the historic district years. We score and steam the paper off, scrape the glue, and then look at the plaster underneath. Hairline cracks get filled and taped, loose sections get repaired, and the whole wall gets a sealing primer so the new paint does not flash or bubble. The result is a smooth, even wall that looks right in a home that old.
